Hi everyone. I am new here. What do you think about the title?

Stuart Shulman: After 10 years of DG conferences, this is an important question. Digital Government may be a term that needs updating. Whether mGov is the way forward, is not clear. While mobiles are ubiquitous and tweets come straight from the Capitol Building whil... [read more]

The Board of DGSNA, the Digital Government Society of North America, has decided that the dg.o 2009 conference, originally scheduled to be held in Puebla, Mexico, on May 18-20, will not be held this year, due to fears raised by the swine flu epidemic. This was a difficult decision to make, and involved extensive discussions and the investigation of various alternatives. We are aware that the annual conference is one of the signal events of the ye... [read more]

Due to the outbreak of swine flu virus, we regret to announce that the dg.o 2009 conference will not be held in Puebla on May 17-20 this year. The conference organizers are investigating the following alternatives: + postponement: holding the conference later this year in Puebla + movement: holding the conference later this year elsewhere + virtualization: holding the conference virtually, via the web + merging with dg.o 2010 or some other DG-rel... Luis F. Luna-Reyes posted Where is Puebla?

Hello all, Since I live here, I forgot to tell you where is Puebla, and maybe more than one is asking it himself or herself. Sorry about that. Puebla is 60 miles to the south from Mexico City. There are few international flights in the local airport, but you can also travel to Mexico City and then take a bus to Puebla. Buses depart every 30 minutes directly from Mexico City airport, cost 170 pesos and it is a 2-hour ride (1 hour to leave Mexico C... [read more]

Luis F. Luna-Reyes: The tutorials will be held at NH Hotel, but the welcome reception and the poster session will be held at the Camino Real Hotel, there is just few blocks between them. Buses will leave from both hotels to the university in the morning and back in the ... [read more]

Luis F. Luna-Reyes posted "Noches Poblanas"

I'm just arriving home from a nice evening in Downtown Puebla. I went with my wife and kids to a nice show called "Las Noches Poblanas". The show takes place in the "Casa de la Cultura" (Culture House) every Saturday at 7:00 pm, and you can listen, watch and even dance some very nice Mexican Waltzes, music from the Mexican Revolution, and see the "chinas" and "chinacos" dancing some "Jarabes". I did not take my camera, but I found a demo on Youtu... [read more]

Luis F. Luna-Reyes posted Something about Cholula

San Andres Cholula, a small city that has become part of Puebla Metropolitan area, is the most ancient continuously inhabitated city in Mexico (the city was founded about 500 b.c.). The host University, UDLAP, is in this ancient city, and less than a mile away from the University there is an archeological site with one of the biggest pyramids in Mexico, which is still covered because it has a XVI century church on top. However, archeologists have... [read more]

Luis F. Luna-Reyes posted Another nice place to visit

Another very nice place to visit while you are in Puebla is the city of Tlaxcala in the state of the same name. Although a different state in Mexico, Tlaxcala is only 30 minutes from Puebla and Cholula by car. Downtown Tlaxcala is also full of colonial buildings and typical restaurants. I am posting here a picture of the Saint Francis Convent in downtown Tlaxcala.

Stephen Purpura posted dgo 2009 LaTex formatting

Is there any reason not to use the 2008 dgo LaTex format documents for 2009?

Please read our short "Dear Colleagues" letter from Jing and Andrea describing the opportunity to propose pre-conference workshops and tutorials for dg.o 2009. If you lead a successful tutorial, dg.o will pay you $500.

J. Ramon Gil-Garcia: I think that these are great opportunities for sharing information and knowledge about specific topics. For example, last year I organized a tutorial on the use of Partial Least Squares...

Janice Warner left a note for Dwight Toavs

I was interested to see that you are working on virtual worlds in government - I had started to explore virtual worlds but abandoned it - It seems it's a lot easier to interact with a government agency in a tradition sense. Do you have interesting applications that are better in a virtual world? I hope you submit a paper in this area.

Stuart Shulman posted The original dg.o vision

What did dg.o aspire to become?

Stuart Shulman: Getting interesting research into actual government practice is difficult. Some 2003 reflections on this from Eduard Hovy remain on point for researchers today:
Stuart Shulman: According to Valerie Gregg (2002), DG is a "state of mind." I think that is still an apt description!
J. Ramon Gil-Garcia: I totally agree with Stuart. This is still a very good description!

Luis F. Luna-Reyes posted More from Puebla

Another nice place for a family/friends visit around Puebla is Africam Safari zoo. You drive in your car among the free animals first, and in a second section you can walk closer to some others like the kangaroos and wallabies.

J. Ramon Gil-Garcia: I am sure dg.o 2009 is going to be not only an intellectually estimulating event, as always, but also a wonderful opportunity to visit a very nice area in Mexico.

Luis F. Luna-Reyes posted One of my favorite possible hotels

This is one of the two patios of the Camino Real Hotel in the heart of Puebla Historic District, and one of my favorite places to have our Poster and Dinner Session.

Stuart Shulman: Fantastic! Luis, I cannot wait to get to Puebla. Keep sharing the wonderful pictures. Many thanks! ~Stu
J. Ramon Gil-Garcia: Hi Luis! Yes, this is a great place and I look forward to attending dg.o 2009 in Puebla. Best, Ramon

This is more archival video from past dg.o meetings. In this case, Larry Brandt of the NSF speaks at dg.o 2003 about the role of social science in the Digital Government research tradition and some of the emerging needs of government agencies.

J. Ramon Gil-Garcia: I think this is very interesting and agree with Stuart that still reflects in several ways our goal in digital government research.
